100 Bulldog Names, Grouped by Theme (With Jokes Where They Help)

You just brought home a bulldog. Congratulations. You now own a snoring, wheezing, opinionated sack of love that will sleep on your feet, eat your flip-flops, and stare at you like you're the problem.

Now it needs a name.

We know the struggle. We're a family with seven English bulldogs in Lehi, Utah, and we've spent a lot of time yelling names across the yard to see which ones a bulldog will ignore least. (Spoiler: they ignore all of them. Some just do it with more dignity.)

So we put together 100 bulldog names, grouped by theme, with a dry little joke wherever one helps. Whether your new pup is lounging under a ceiling fan in Tampa or sulking through a snowstorm, there's a name here that fits the attitude.

How to Pick a Bulldog Name (The Short Version)

Before the list, a few honest tips from people who engrave names onto tags for a living:

  • Do the yell test. Stand in your backyard (or a Publix parking lot, if you're brave) and shout it. If you feel embarrassed, good. That's the bulldog experience.
  • One or two syllables works best. "Gus" carries. "Sir Reginald Wobbleton the Third" does not, especially when he's eating something off the sidewalk.
  • Think about the tag. Shorter names leave room on a dog tag for a phone number and a joke. Priorities. (Here's what to put on a dog tag.)
  • Match the face. Bulldogs have faces that look like they're worried about their taxes. Lean into it.

Putting the Name on a Tag (Where It Actually Matters)

A name is only useful if the nice stranger who finds your escaped bulldog can read it. Bulldogs don't run far. They mostly lie down somewhere inconvenient and wait to be discovered. But a tag is still the fastest way home.

A few things we've learned engraving tags:

  • Name, phone number, and something memorable. A good joke makes people actually read the tag instead of just glancing at it.
  • Keep it legible. Laser engraving holds up well, but a super long name squeezed onto a small tag doesn't do anyone favors.
  • Microchip too. A tag gets you a phone call. A chip is the backup. Use both.

And yes, "Microchipped. Still dumb." is a real saying in our builder. More bulldog lines are on our bulldog tags page, and the smaller cousins get their own French bulldog names. Your bulldog will wear it with pride, mostly because they don't know what it says.

Found the perfect name? Put it on something with a little attitude. Build a laser-engraved tag in the builder or start from our bulldog sayings, made by a family that's been snored at by seven bulldogs and wouldn't have it any other way.

Questions humans ask

FAQ

Still stuck? [email protected]. A human answers. The dogs supervise.

What's a good name for a male English bulldog?

Classic picks like Winston, Tank, Gus, and Meatball suit the breed's tough-but-goofy vibe. Old-man names like Walter or Harold work especially well, since most bulldogs act like they've been retired since birth.

What's a good name for a female English bulldog?

Mabel, Doris, Pearl, Duchess, and Butterbean are all solid. Old-lady names fit the "runs the household and judges everyone in it" energy many bulldog girls have.

Should a bulldog's name be short?

Usually, yes. One or two syllables is easier to call out, easier for your dog to pick up, and easier to fit on a tag alongside your phone number. You can always have a long formal name and a short everyday one.

Can I rename a bulldog I adopted?

Generally, yes. Many dogs learn a new name with consistency and plenty of treats. Use it often, pair it with good things, and be patient. Bulldogs respond to snacks far faster than they respond to logic.

Are funny names okay for bulldogs?

Absolutely. Bulldogs are walking comedy. A funny name just means you're being honest about who you live with. Just make sure it's something you're comfortable yelling at the vet's office and the dog park.
